Hi! I’m an art major who still has a couple of years to go before I reach the graduate level in my studies, but I’m already worried about paying for my schooling. Do you want an MS or a PhD?
Most of the PhD programs give aid to their students in the form of fellowships, research assistantships or teaching assistantships. This usually involves free tuition and a stipend that is large enough to live on. It isn't a good idea to work if you are getting a PhD.
Most of the better schools only accept PhD students and do not accept terminal MS students.
Schools that do not have a PhD program but offer an MS are usually not as good — though some have decent programs. They will usually give aid to a few students — but most pay their way through the program.
