I plan on moving there when I finish graduate journalism school to work my way up to being a reporter.
Let me tell you. It's an amazing city. I am a world traveller and have been to many places but Toronto ranks right up there in the top 5. There's a lot of stuff to do and it's a clean city and very safe and people are friendly. Personally the only two cities I like more in North America are Montreal and New York. However, Montreal doesnt have as many businesses and people as Toronto (I love people). New York has more crime, poverty and is less clean. Public transportation is great and frequent. It isn't as extensive and frequent as New York but leaps ahead of Montreal. There's many places to visit and many things to do. The most amazing thing about any Canadian city is how safe it is. And despite being the largest city in Canada with a moderately high population (yes moderate when you compare to some of the other cities I've been to; check my profile), it is very safe and clean. You can walk at 3-4 in the morning without feeling insecure. The multiculturalism and people are amazing. To see the diverse people at their best a weird but amazing suggestion is to ride the blue night bus which runs on bloor (among other routes) after 2 am. You'll see so many different (and sometimes crazy but harmless) people that it is a joy. And don't listen to small town people saying how bad the place is. They've never lived in Toronto and don't know. I lived there for four months and that was the best 4 months I had in Canada.
I know Columbia is the best journalism school, but mostly for the graduate programs. So would you say it would help to go to NYU or Yale as an undergraduate?
Also, for people who have been accepted to NYU this year or in the past, what background (of grades and activities and test scores) did you come from to be accepted?
I appreciate your answers!
NYU probably, Yale is a wonderful school but its not exactly in the thick of civilization.
I would like to go to NYU to double major in acting and journalism in a couple years for an undergraduate degree. I would try to be getting a full swimming scholarship with NYU. I would like to go to Columbia for journalism for a graduate degree, but stay at NYU for the graduate acting program. I would want to go to Columbia's rather than NYU because it is a stronger program. Can I do this? Is Berkeley's graduate program for journalism better than Columbia? I am planning to move to L.A. after grad/undergrad school, because I am a tv/film actor. Can I get graduate scholarships to both schools? I want to be a cultural/critic journalist. I can see myself working more in the entertainment buisness. Like Rolling Stone Magazine or Variety. I can also see myself in newspapers such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, or the Upfron Magazine managed by the Times, which is a teen magazine. Do you think this is a good idea? Any feedback on which what you think I should do? Thanks!
Would it be worth doing a HS internship at CNN Atlanta, if I don't want to go into broadcast journalism. Or should I try the Atlanta Journal, or should I intern in both? Thanks!
At Columbia do you have to get a MA before an MS? Or do you have to take both? ![]()
Although you have too many goals and are still young, I'll still help entertain your predicament.
You cannot attend two Graduate Schools at once, nor can ou get scholarships for graduate school. They only offer assistantships, which is you help professors conduct research. First you have to go through college, then have really good grades, take the GREs, 3 letters of recommendation, writing samples, resume and thensome. Graduate School is much more difficult then college, the coursework is more intense. NYU and Columbia are some of the top universities in the country and world, as Columbia is an Ivy-League institution.
An MA and MS are two separate degrees, You get one of them not both. Since you like journalism, film etc., you will apply for an MA (Master's of Arts). The industry you like is a good idea, but remember that it is extremely competitive and your goals may change once you get to college. If you can take the CNN internship, the by all means do it!
I am college searching (woo hoo, fun) and I plan to start a career in journalism after I graduate. I have had my sights set on Northwestern University, because it has one of the best journalism schools in the country, but I was also considering applying to some Ivy League schools. The thing is, most of the Ivy Leagues that I’ve looked at so far only have journalism classes, not majors. And when I was checking out Yale, they have these oppurtunities for people to become Journalism Scholars and all of this stuff, but I don’t know if that would really aid me when I apply to be a broadcast journalist at a news network. So can anyone who has gone to college already, and knows all of these things, please help me? Thank you!
Most if not all of the Ivy's (and similar top schools) don't have profession-based majors….but that doesn't mean you don't get excellent preparation to enter those professions. For instance, you major in economics and not accounting. You don't major in journalism, you major in English. The idea is to get you to think, understand, and analyze. Attending an Ivy would be a great preparation for journalism…do you really believe there aren't people from Harvard, Yale, and the other Ivy schools in the media?
That said, Columbia is famous for it's journalism grad school…even if they don't have a journalism major (I don't know if they do) you could get an excellent foundation there….and in NYC you're perfectly situated to land amazing internships in the media.
