Between someone from a Top 14 school like NYU who has mediocre / poor grades and someone from a mediocre 2nd, 3rd, or 4th tier school with great grades, who is more likely to get a good-paying job (all other consideration being equal)?

If you're planning to go to law school, get used to this answer: It depends.

There are two ways to open gilded doors: Credentials and Connections. Your question focuses on Credentials, but you want to maximize your shot at both.

A top school is a strong credential. But Law Review, Moot Court, and top 5% at a "lesser" school are also strong credentials. Law Review is the strongest.

A small lower-tier school will increase your chance of making Law Review (etc) and your chance of making intimate connections. But that's all it is… a chance. Never a guarantee. That's why I suggest going to the best school you can get into and giving it your all when you get there.

If you must choose among lower-tier schools, look for the one with the most connections in your field of law. In some areas of law, the right connections are better than any credential. That's why "it depends."

And please seriously consider a judicial clerkship. They are hard to get (much like the high-paying job) so you should be working toward it from the very beginning (starting now!).

Your chances are zero-if you don't apply

But, if youre certain you can't get in then try for smaller schools and get your grades up. Stellar grades can greatly approve your chances of acceptance even with lower gmat scores.

and practice the gmat until you get a better score.

There's no definite way to know if your scores are good enough. Sometimes it also depends on the college/program you're applying to. Some colleges have more stringent requirements if they're a more selective program.

But you've got to apply.

Hello, I am thinking of applying to grad school in NYC-NYU, Columbia, and Hunter. They all have great programs for art history (I want a masters in that). the problem is that NYU and Columbia cost like 5 times more than Hunter. Im thinking that it is smarter to go to Hunter since it is so much cheaper. It rates lower than Columbia or NYU but it is still in the top ten. What do you think?

Hunter may still be in the top 10, but it doesn't even come CLOSE to Columbia or NYU reputation/prestige-wise. I think it would be wise to go to the better college, even if it costs more.

I'll be moving in from So Cal. Gotta find a place to live. Don't know the campus, neighborhood, or cool places to go. I'd love any tips for anyone coming to the school for the first time.
Nope, I'm studying history.

are you a film student?
