I graduated with a BBA from hotel management school in switzerland 3 years ago, and currently not working. I haven't exactly been pursing my career in the hotel industry and decided i want to study law instead. I have a 3.46 GPA and scoring around 164-169 for LSAT prep tests. What are my chances for getting into top tier schools??? And would these schools consider recommendation letters from my ex co-workers, as I don't think my professors would remember me by now, and all my bosses hated me… Also, I really want to go to NYU since some members of my family graduated from there. Would that influence my chance for getting accepted?? thanks!!

Legacy helps a little, but not much. It's more for when they are torn between you and another equally qualified candidate, then it would tip the scales in your favor.

However, you're quite far from the average stats of an NYU law student. I wouldn't hold your breath. If you had to go there, I'd go for a masters somewhere to boost your GPA. Then, study for the LSAT again and aim for 173+. Theoretically, NYU is still possible, but highly unlikely.

You can still get into a top tier school. Just look a bit lower down than from the NYU level. Check the US News rankings.

You can get letters of rec from whoever you want. If it's coworkers, than that's what you have to do. It's more important about what they can tell the admissions people about you versus who they are.

I lived in Houma, Louisiana for 28 years. I recently moved to NY to attend NYU graduate school. NY’ers care about the issues, debate, discuss, and they see through the one line hype of McCain.

NYers only care about electing a democrat. Hopefully they will listen to the man instead of shuting down because he isn’t a liberal democrat…./

I graduated from NYU Film School in 1991 with a BA in film studies. I had a 2.9 gpa. Not the best.

Does anyone know of a legitimate law school that has a reputation for being easier to get into than the average law school? Thanks.

I had a friend with a 2.9 GPA, out of college for 8 years, who got into New York Law School (on Worth St., downtown). I think her LSAT was about 160. If you're into public service, like Legal Aid type work, CUNY Law School in Queens puts less emphasis on undergrad GPA as long as you show in your application that you are committed to service.

What are the the factors that graduate schools look at? I would appreciate it if someone with well knowledge in this field please explain to me the factors that are looked at for good graduate schools such as NYU or Columbia.

I think you would get better answers if you specified what program you are applying to. The requirements for acceptance into the Business schools at NYU and Columbia differ greatly from the requirements to get into High Education Administration or something.

I am a Masters in Information Systems program student at NYU. The requirements are a college GPA of 3.2 or better, GRE math above 85th percentile, a statement of purpose, 2 letters of recommendation and a resume (you have to have at least 1.5 years of experience).

I think at schools like Columbia, successful applicants generally have much more than the baseline requirements. Also, the requirements would be slightly different depending on what program you are looking at.

A great way to find out what these schools like is to check out class profiles that show the academic stats of the students that are currently enrolled. I got this one off of NYU's Stern business school's website

Good luck.
